The Superior Dome at Northern Michigan University in Marquette is the world's largest wooden dome structure and fifth-largest dome overall, standing 14 stories high and encompassing 5.1 acres under its roof. Constructed in 1991 from 781 Douglas Fir beams and 108.5 miles of fir decking, the facility can withstand 60 pounds per square foot of snow and 80 mph winds. Home to Wildcat football, women's lacrosse, and track teams, the Dome features retractable artificial turf (largest in the world), a 200-meter synthetic track, three basketball/volleyball courts, and seating for 8,000 (expandable to 16,000). The facility houses NMU Athletic department offices, ticket office, strength and conditioning weight rooms, and wrestling teams.
